Welcome to NuHub, the Midstate's global connection for nuclear opportunities,
As co-chair for NuHub, it is my pleasure to announce the launch of NuHub and the first of what will be a quarterly journal of the latest advances in research, technology, development, and progress in the nuclear industry of the Midstate of South Carolina.

Columbia and the Midstate region are rich with opportunities for the nuclear industry to flourish, and as you'll see below, there has been no shortage of ink spilled by our local and national media praising the successes of the industry over the past quarter. We are a region well-stocked with leaders in the nuclear industry. The Midstate has researchers pioneering the latest technologies at the University of South Carolina, utilities like SCE&G and Santee Cooper are investing in launching the next wave of nuclear power generation in Jenkensville, private firms are producing the technology necessary to power these initiatives, and our teachers at Midlands Technical College and South Carolina State University are training the next wave of highly skilled employees to keep our plants running safely. We are proud to serve as a voice for them all.

While we have existed for over a year, we are still relatively new to our friends and colleagues in the community and industry. Please accept our introduction and join us as we embark on the next wave of the nuclear renaissance in South Carolina.

Midstate Headlines

This past quarter was an exciting month for nuclear in the midstate. The region consistently made headlines for new investment in nuclear, particularly in October, while politicians jumped on board to support nuclear in the area, including a strong support opinion editorial from U.S. Rep. Joe Wilson. Here's our wrap-up on what happened this past quarter below.

SMR Updates

Questions still remain about whether legislation to supplement funding for Small Modular Reactors will pass this December, but the industry continues to flourish in the Midstate and support remains around the nation for what many believe will be the future of nuclear.

Columbia-based Trulite Powers Party for Energy Sec. Chu

From Energy.Gov/USC-City of Columbia Fuel Cell Collaborative - Employees at the Energy Department’s annual holiday party were greeted with many familiar sights – festive decorations, sugar cookies, and a tree in sparkling lights.  In addition to the traditional holiday fare, guests were presented with something new. For the first time ever, the lights used to decorate the holiday tree were powered by a clean, efficient fuel cell.
Fuel cells produce clean electricity from a number of domestic fuels, including renewables, natural gas, and hydrogen, and can provide power for virtually any application—from cars and buses to holiday lights. Fuel cells work like batteries, but they do not run down or need recharging. They produce electricity and heat as long as fuel is supplied.
The portable fuel cell used at this year’s holiday party is made by Trulite.  The fuel cell generates about 150 watts of power—making it ideal for recharging laptops, cell phones, and other everyday appliances.

Continued widespread use of hydrogen and fuel cells could play a substantial role in overcoming our nation’s key energy challenges—including reducing greenhouse gas emissions and oil consumption as well as improving air quality. Energy Department funding has led to over 300 U.S. hydrogen and fuel cell patents and directly contributed to bringing over 30 commercial technologies to the market place.

Incorporating clean, renewable technologies into time-honored traditions right at the Energy Department’s headquarters is something that resonates with employees. “It’s great to see fuel cells used in a more domestic setting that people can relate to,” said Kristen Abkemeier.  Shannon Shea, another holiday party attendee, added, “It’s one of the ways DOE is walking the walk.”

USC and EngenuitySC Lead $3.6 Million Initiative to Empower Soldiers in Battle with Fuel Cells

The University of South Carolina’s newest endowed chair, Dr. Jochen Lauterbach, is changing the way the military powers itself. Dr. Lauterbach’s team is working to identify and test catalysts for fuel cells that, when paired with a reformer system, will enable the military to produce propane from JP-8 and feed it into fuel cells that will power everything from communications equipment to unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).  

Lauterbach and EngenuitySC teamed up over the year to lead a $3.6 million Department of Defense research project to help unlock the energy in JP-8, an energy-dense fuel with superior performance characteristics over batteries and other alternatives. The military is exploring how reformed JP-8 can be used to power fuel cell technologies in forward combat zones rather than transporting pure propane or other, highly combustible carbon-based fuels.

“The challenge is that these soldiers often times find themselves in areas where traditional supply lines cannot be established. Batteries don’t provide the performance that soldiers need and they can’t get other types of fuels into the field as easily,” said Gregory Hilton, Senior Program Manager for EngenuitySC. He and 3 principal investigators from the University of South Carolina , Dr. Kenneth Reifsneider, Dr. Brian Benicewicz, and Dr. Jochen Lauterbach, were charged with leading the research project.

“The University of South Carolina is quickly gaining a reputation as not only a world class energy-oriented research institute, but a place that provides real solutions for real world problems,” he said of the University and its team. “This is the true value of investing in a research and innovation-oriented economy.”

EngenuitySC sat down with Dr. Lauterbach to discuss the project, its importance to the military, and how their results could change the way the world sees South Carolina:

EngenuitySC: Why is DARPA interested in funding research for fuel cells and JP-8?

Jochen Lauterbach: It can provide much higher flexibility for the widespread deployment of fuel cell systems. I will allow fuel cells to run off widely available fuels and the military could reply on existing supply chains for jet fuel rather than building new supply chains for hydrogen ,methanol, or LPG.

ESC: What made the University of South Carolina team so unique.

JL: Our team is one of the few academic groups that develop and employ high-throughput methodologies for the discovery of novel catalytic materials. This allows us to very quickly respond to new challenges and develop promising leads in a very efficient way.

ESC: What real world problems do you hope to solve with this project?

JL: This project will provide a solution for sulfur tolerant fuel reforming catalysts. The application is not only limited to producing fuel cell feed from jetfuel, but has also potential applications for the production of liquefied petroleum gas from other hydrocarbon fuels, such as diesel and biofuels.

ESC: Why do you believe that it is critical for South Carolina to continue to invest in education and research?

JL: Since the 1980s, the US job market has become polarized between high-skilled, high-wage jobs and low-wage, low-skilled jobs. At the lower end of the labor market, wages have stagnated or declined, and that is certainly something we see here in South Carolina. South Carolina’s competitiveness and our energy future are intimately connected and provide our state with a tremendous opportunity, but we need to act now!

There is a strong need for new sources of energy that do not constrain out foreign policy objectives nor imperil our planet, but to achieve this, we need very significant breakthroughs in energy innovation. This problem poses a huge opportunity for the countries, firms, and workers that can provide a solution, who will produce new industries and jobs, and who could be an important part of strengthening future competitiveness of South Carolina. 

In order to be leaders in innovation, however, we need a well-educated workforce, and the United States is clearly falling behind. While we we continue to discuss what we should do, many places across the would are actively investing in education, energy research, and manufacturing of new technologies.

So if you're a college student with a passion for entrepreneurship and developing the knowledge economy, looking to get some excellent (paid) experience, build a portfolio for future full time employers, and interested in working directly with some of Columbia's top leaders, take a look at the listing below and let us know if you're interested in joining our team for a few semesters. 

As if being paid to be an intern isn't enough, I'll do all the paperwork necessary to get you some class credit as well. Want more hours in the summer? We can handle that. Position Description – Marketing & Communications Coordinator Internship

Deadline: We will make an offer no later than January 5th, 2012. Candidate should be available to begin orientation on or around January 9th, 2012.

Availability: 10-20 hours per week, Monday-Friday between 8:30am and 5:30pm. Some evening work (5pm-8pm) may be required for events and programs. No weekends. 

EngenuitySC, a public/private 501(c)3 non-profit, is seeking qualified student candidates to provide program support for outreach projects tied to marketing and communications efforts in the greater Columbia, SC region. These efforts are focused on entrepreneurship, economic development, and community building and will give the selected candidate a highly visible portfolio of work and an opportunity to connect with high-level community, business, academic, and government leaders in Columbia.

The ideal candidate will have a strong interest in entrepreneurship, economic development, or community development; have a thorough understanding of Columbia’s business and cultural environment; and will be available 10-20 hours per week during the semester, with the possibility of full time work during the summer period. Candidates looking to develop a portfolio of highly visible projects across an array of industries, those with a passion for realizing Columbia’s potential to be a world-class city, and those with a genuine desire to support entrepreneurship (or to be an entrepreneur themselves) will benefit most from their time with EngenuitySC and be most successful in this position.

About The Organization:
Headquartered in Columbia, EngenuitySC is public/private partnership formed to develop and grow the South Carolina Midstate’s knowledge-based economy by fostering an environment where entrepreneurship, innovation, and the creation of knowledge are fundamental elements of the region’s culture, identity, and economic development strategy.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Work directly with Marketing & Communications Coordinator to execute community events and create digital and print marketing and communications materials.
  2. Assist with the creation and distribution of communications for events, programs, and activities through print, online, verbal, and graphic mediums.
  3. Provide updates and content management for program websites and web-based communities.
  4. Collect and manage data and news pertaining to client and stakeholder interests in the public and private sector. Conduct supporting market research as needed.
  5. Assist with the development and distribution of collateral materials for client-based marketing and communications efforts.
  6. Assist with event planning for community-based programs and meeting planning and execution for clients.
  7. Maintain the mission and message of each client program in all mediums while identifying opportunities for collaboration.
  8. Additional administrative tasks as needed.


Applicants should have a strong background in at least 2 to 4 of the listed qualifications. They do not need to have skills in all areas to be considered. We will tailor the duties and responsibilities for the position to fit your strengths and interests.

  1. Sophomore or higher with relevant educational background in business, economics, marketing, communications, journalism, public relations, event planning, and or media arts.
  2. Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.
  3. Experience in developing and maintaining a coordinated online presence in social media communities, light website content management.
  4. Experience in marketing, drafting press releases, writing copy and digital newsletters
  5. Experience with event planning/execution for minimum of 40 attendees.
  6. Proficiency with Microsoft Office 2010 (Publisher skills preferred).
  7. Ability to identify, analyze, and present relevant information in a concise manner.
  8. Strong attention to detail and the ability to handle multiple tasks in a fast paced environment.
  9. Strong written and verbal communication skills and professional appearance.


  1. Experience with Constant Contact, Mailchimp, or similar electronic newsletter platforms.
  2. Experience with graphic design.
  3. Experience with HTML coding.
  4. Available for employment for 1 calendar year or longer.
  5. Experience with community-based programs and initiatives.
  6. Interest in economic development and awareness of activities in the local and regional economy.
  7. Interest in entrepreneurship, business creation, and technology (Ideally sciences, IT, and or energy).
  8. Availability after hours, at least once per month (2nd Tuesdays)

This position is a paid position at $10 per hour. As an intern, you will gain broad understanding and exposure to economic development, the knowledge economy, research and development, entrepreneurship/commercialization, industry clusters, and business consulting; make invaluable connections to high level leaders in the Columbia community; and build a portfolio of marketing and communications and tangible project management experience.  

This position will report and be accountable to the Marketing and Communications Coordinator (a.k.a. Project Coordinator). Other projects may be assigned upon request by the remainder of the staff.


  1. Reliable transportation, preferably a personal vehicle. Mileage for any out of town travel will be reimbursed.


  1. Create a portfolio of experience distributed to nearly 10,000 followers over various media outlets including The State, Columbia Regional Business Report, 3500 newsletter followers, and 1000 social media followers.
  2. Meet, connect, and work with Columbia and the state’s top leaders in business, government, academia, and community and economic development.  
  3. Close mentoring by a small staff of young and vibrant community leaders.
  4. Atmosphere open to input and new ideas.
  5. Competitive wage and flexible hours. Opportunity for increased hours during summer employment.
  6. Supervisor will complete work necessary to help student receive academic credit for this position.
  7. Mileage (fuel) reimbursement for travel.

TEDxNewEngland | The Future of Nuclear Power: Getting Rid of Nuclear Waste

For the first time in decades, there are an abundance of new designs for nuclear power reactors -- ones that are safer, more powerful, more portable, and even ones that produce hardly any nuclear waste. From the Department of Nuclear Science and Engineering at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Professor Dr. Richard Lester and Graduate Students Mark Massie and Leslie Dewan will talk about the evolution of nuclear power in the United States, and directions that the industry might take in the future. They will also describe new technology that solves two of the biggest problems with nuclear power -- Safety and Waste Disposal.

Ten Innovation Myths

Over the past year I've shifted my presentation materials so they include mostly pictures and 96 point font. That's good for audiences (at least, I think it is), but bad when I get the kind of request that landed in my in-box last week.

"I'm doing an innovation update at one of our meetings and I'm hoping you can assist me with some conversation starters," a senior leader said to one of our clients. "The main point of the presentation is to get the audience thinking proactively and positively about how they can contribute to innovation."

I had presented a slideshow on this exact topic in April. Unfortunately, my slides consisted of a big picture of a black box, a photo of Steve Jobs, headshots of eight academics, a screenshot of an Old Spice advertising campaign, and a picture of my favorite haircut place in Singapore. The slides are pretty, but they won't help a thirdparty who lacks the context.

So, my colleague Josh Suskewicz and I put our heads together and came up with the 10 innovation myths that we encounter most often in the field.

EngenuitySC Announces Ignite 2011 Speakers

EngenuitySC is excited to announce its speakers for Ignite 2011, taking place November 16th from 5:15pm-8:00pm at The Zone. Like the video released in August featuring Mayor Benjamin, President Pastides, and some of Columbia's best entrepreneurs and grassroots leaders, this year's speakers represent a diverse array of Columbia's entreprenurial talent and embody the event's theme of start something.
